Reporting to the clinical manager of the SC Maternal Mortality Review (MMR) Program in the Population Health Surveillance Section under the Bureau of Maternity and Child Health, this position conducts surveillance of records for maternal deaths; interprets medical diagnoses and abstracts statistical/medical information into a database. Responsibilities include ensuring completeness/accuracy of information; confidentiality measures; meeting organizational objectives; providing progress reports; and, serving as liaison to hospital/clinic departments. Conducts family interviews regarding maternal deaths and provides resources as needed.Conducts surveillance of medical records for maternal deaths, interprets medical diagnoses and abstracts clinical and non-clinical information into a database. Responsibilities include ensuring completeness/accuracy of information, confidentiality measures, meeting organizational objectives, providing progress reports and serving as a liaison to hospitals and clinic departments. Conducts family interviews regarding maternal deaths and provides resources as needed. Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned, including required travel if requested, and responds as directed during emergencies which may occur outside normal work hours, and travel if requested.State Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Licensure as a registered nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina. Some positions require certification in Basic Life Support. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver’s license.
Agency Additional Requirements: Must hold an active South Carolina nursing license in good standing, or a valid multistate license in good standing from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) participating state (this allows them to be hired, start working, and have 60 days to change over to SC license by endorsement by BON. Exception is for military status and/or spouse).

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.Bachelor of Science in Nursing. At least two (2) years of professional nursing experience in a public health or hospital setting. At least one (1) year of experience in medical record abstraction. Must have a valid SC Driver's license.
