The Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for the professional and administrative management of Inpatient, Outpatient, and Community Care Network areas in pharmacy service, to include budgetary execution. This position performs patient care activities to include planning and implementation of Clinical Practice Guidelines of drug therapy pertinent to the specialized pharmacy service line.

• Typical duties include but are not limited to: Supervisory Responsible for supervising multiple pharmacists and the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor. Develops performance standards, assures that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, and develops and maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. This position is a working supervisor, the majority of time requirements of the position are dedicated to routine pharmacist drug distribution functions, while providing direct supervision to other distributive pharmacy employees. Dispensing/Drug Distribution Assures the accuracy and appropriateness of drug dispensing and the compounding of medications based on patient history and medication profile review, good clinical practice, and other pertinent factors. Processes all orders within areas of responsibility, including non-formulary medication orders, discharge consult processing for inpatients during tour of duty. Dispenses prescriptions in an accurate and timely manner when assigned; selects, compounds, dispenses and fills a range of drugs including extemporaneous preparations, special formulations, ophthalmic (subconjunctival and intravitreal injections), narcotics, investigational drugs, oncolytic agents, etc., in both outpatient and inpatient areas. Medication Management Program Coordination Employs current VA, The Joint Commission (TJC), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other research accrediting bodies or authorities to meet standards and/or regulations set forth by these organizations regarding drug distribution, compounding of sterile products, security and inventory management system and procedures in a pharmacy setting. Establishes policies and procedures regarding pharmacy management of medication therapy. Provides leadership duties of Pharmacy Service professional staff (pharmacy technicians, trainees and pharmacists to provide effective operation of the Pharmacy as needed and assigned by the Service Chief or other Service Management. Clinical Pharmacy Practice Provides medication management of chronic and acute diseases including assessment and therapeutic monitoring, patient education and medication adherence enhancement. Non-formulary and prior-authorization drug adjudication, assisting with conversion to formulary agents, poly-pharmacy medication review and complex-regimen medication reconciliation. Reviews patient's being discharged to ascertain any medication issues requiring follow-up and coordinate with the provider, nurse/physician liaison and/or social worker as appropriate to arrange the appropriate follow-up. Education Assists in development of formal/informal programs to enhance pharmacist and technician understanding relating to acute care clinical pharmacy practice. Participates in Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee (P&T) functions and assignments as required, e.g., ADR monitoring, medication error reporting, Medication Utilization Evaluation activities, drug monographs/reviews, etc. Presenting information to committee as assigned. Supervises and trains pharmacist, pharmacy students, and pharmacy technicians. Contributes to pharmacy newsletters and other written educational materials as assigned. Research Will know and comply with investigational medication policy and procedures and monitor investigational medication prescriptions/orders for completeness, drug interactions, dosage, duration of therapy, and adherence to existing formulary requirements. May participate in research activities in accordance with FDA guidelines and regulations and VHA policy. Participates with clinical staff, faculty, and other health professionals to collect and analyze data related to ongoing clinical programs or therapies and presents program data either at national scientific or medical meetings or publishes program data in professionally representative publications as appropriate. Quality Management Contributing to criteria development, data collection and drug use evaluation and other quality improvement activities as assigned. Develops and leads teams to improve pharmacy service's relationships with other health care providers within assigned clinical area(s) and all areas within the health care system.
