America's ICBMs and the Airmen who run them have been on continuous, around-the-clock alert since 1959, and today that alert is four hundred Minuteman IIIs, kept there by this command. Activated August 7, 2009 and headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, it holds three intercontinental ballistic missile wings, the entire bomber force in B-52, B-1, and B-2 wings, the B-21 Raider program, and the nuclear command, control, and communications systems that tie them together.
The work divides between missiles and bombers, plus a base-support wing of its own. 20th Air Force holds the missile wings at F.E. Warren in Wyoming, Minot in North Dakota, and Malmstrom in Montana. It also holds the 377th Air Base Wing at Kirtland in New Mexico. 8th Air Force holds bomber wings at Barksdale in Louisiana, Minot again, Dyess in Texas, Ellsworth in South Dakota, and Whiteman in Missouri. Civilians work at every one of them alongside Airmen.
