A small group of physicians met at The Drake Hotel in Chicago on June 10, 1924, and founded the American Heart Association, at a point when a heart disease diagnosis carried no treatment and no real hope. A hundred years on, the organization describes itself as the nation's oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, with nearly 40 million volunteers, donors, advocates, staff, and supporters behind it.

The money side is the part to know if fundraising is your trade. The Association counts more than $5.7 billion put into cardiovascular scientific research over that century, which it calls the largest such investment outside the federal government, and the source is community-based volunteers, donors, and employees rather than a single endowment. The campaigns it names are the recognizable ones: Heart Walk, Go Red for Women, Nation of Lifesavers, and the Second Century campaign, whose donors pledge time and talent along with funds. The American Stroke Association was created inside it in 1998. The mission, in the organization's own words: to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. The results it claims for the century are concrete: heart disease deaths cut in half, stroke deaths down by a third since 1998.
