AMR came together in 1992, when several regional ambulance providers consolidated into one company in response to changes in healthcare reimbursement, new technology, and the spread of managed care. A 1997 merger with Med Trans made it larger again, and in 2015 it took on Rural Metro and Rural Metro Fire, which is how commercial and industrial fire and safety work ended up inside an ambulance company.

It is now the ground ambulance arm of Global Medical Response, running a fleet of more than 7,000 ambulances and support vehicles staffed for 911 response and interfacility transport at basic life support, advanced life support, and critical care levels. The contracts are with hospital systems, counties, and municipalities, and that is the thing worth checking on any posting: the employer is AMR, but the service you would run is shaped by whichever county or city holds the agreement. Ownership history sits on the same page. Onex Partners bought AMR and its sister company EmCare from Laidlaw International in 2005, the international division that became Global Medical Response was formed the same year, and an air ambulance business followed in 2006. AMR states its mission as providing care to the world at a moment's notice.
