Avera got its name in 2000, when the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton and the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen brought their separate health ministries together and picked a name derived from a Latin word meaning “to be well.” What those orders sponsor now covers 72,000 square miles and a population of a million, across South Dakota and neighboring parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and North Dakota. Inside that footprint sit 38 community and critical access hospitals, regional centers in Aberdeen, Mitchell, Pierre, Sioux Falls, Yankton, and Marshall, Minnesota, and one tertiary hospital, Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls.
Hospitals are only part of it. Avera also runs primary and specialty clinics, senior living, home care and hospice, pharmacies, and home medical equipment, which spreads its roles well past the bedside.
