Barclays traces its ancestry to 1690 and two goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, doing business in Lombard Street, London. The name arrived in 1736, when Freame's son Joseph took his brother-in-law James Barclay on as a partner, and it has stayed on the door since.
