Barclays traces its ancestry to 1690 and two goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, doing business in Lombard Street, London. The name arrived in 1736, when Freame's son Joseph took his brother-in-law James Barclay on as a partner, and it has stayed on the door since. The bank keeps the ledgers, minute books, letters, and equipment from those centuries in its group archives in Manchester. Barclays PLC today is an approved bank holding company registered in England at 1 Churchill Place, London, and its businesses include an investment bank, corporate banking, a private bank, wealth, an international bank, and a US Consumer Bank.

The US Consumer Bank is the card and consumer banking arm, and it is not the whole American picture: Barclays runs its US businesses under Barclays US LLC, which files its own Federal Reserve returns, and the group's careers site names Whippany, New Jersey among six key hiring locations worldwide. The investment bank, corporate banking, private bank, and wealth businesses sit alongside, so the work on offer stretches from consumer operations to markets.
