The history goes back to Confederation year. The Canadian Bank of Commerce was founded on May 15, 1867, the Imperial Bank of Canada followed in 1875, and on June 1, 1961 the two combined in what the bank's own history calls the largest merger of two chartered banks in Canadian history, producing the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. The bank keeps an archive and publishes its own short history, which hints at how it regards the lineage. Its stated purpose is one line long: to help make your ambition a reality. If you're the one applying, the divisions are the map: retail and business banking roles on one side, and on the other the commercial, wealth, and capital markets businesses that carry the North American positioning. A hundred and fifty years of merging settled into one brand, and the institution hires like the diversified bank it says it is.
