City of Baytown careers

Baytown, Texas grew up around oil. The Goose Creek field next door became the first offshore drilling operation in Texas, and in 1917 Ross S. Sterling and his associates founded the Humble Oil and Refining Company to build a refinery beside it. The city itself arrived on January 24, 1948, when Pelly and Goose Creek consolidated and residents chose the name Baytown. It spans southeastern Harris and western Chambers counties thirty miles east of downtown Houston, and its population reached 83,701 in the 2020 count. City government here serves an industrial Gulf Coast town whose refining history is over a century old.
