City of Benicia careers

Benicia's founding story is early California compressed: founded in 1849, third city in the state to incorporate in 1851, and the state capital itself for 13 months starting in 1853, until the legislature decamped to Sacramento. The city's own history page owns all of it, down to the story that word of the gold strike at Sutter's Mill first leaked at a Benicia tavern, and the Gold Rush started from there.

The working town underneath was industrial. The Benicia Arsenal supplied weapons to U.S. troops from 1849 until it was decommissioned in 1964, shipbuilding lasted until just after World War I, and canneries and tanneries kept the waterfront busy well into the 20th century. The name is older still: it arrived in 1847, after General Mariano Vallejo sold a piece of his land grant to Robert Semple and the new town took the name of the general's wife. What remains in public hands is the city government itself, which hires for the civic side of a small waterfront community. Few municipal employers can put a state capital, an arsenal, and a gold rush rumor into one short civic history, and that long memory is part of what working here means.
