Charlottesville belongs to no county. Like Virginia's other independent cities it is, as its own page puts it, autonomous and entirely independent of any political subdivision, which means the city government you'd work for runs everything a county would otherwise share. Founded in 1762, it packs about 48,117 people (the 2018 estimate on its site) into 10.24 square miles.

Geography does a lot of work in Charlottesville's identity. The city sits in the upper Piedmont at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles northwest of Richmond, and its density, over 4,200 people per square mile at the 2010 count, is closer to a small city's downtown than to the rural Virginia around it. The same page acknowledges the Monacan People as the Indigenous custodians of the land it occupies, a line few municipal sites anywhere bother to carry. The independent-city structure is the practical fact for applicants: public safety, public works, parks, social services, and utilities all report to one local government, so the hiring range is wider than the city's small footprint suggests.
