Milpitas incorporated on January 26, 1954, mostly to stop San Jose from annexing it, and that defensive origin fits a place that has held its own next to bigger neighbors ever since. The name reaches back further, to the Spanish milpa, or little cornfields, which is what stood here before anything else did.

The cornfields gave way in stages. Ford brought a manufacturing plant to town after World War II. Computer firms arrived in the 1980s, and one of the nation's largest malls opened in 1994.
