Richmond, Virginia, is its own gas company. Richmond Gas Works pipes natural gas to the city and to portions of Henrico and Chesterfield counties, one of five utilities the Department of Public Utilities runs alongside water, wastewater, stormwater, and the electric streetlighting that keeps more than 37,000 lights burning. The department is also cleaning up after its own history: the former Fulton Gas Works in the east end, which made gas for city streetlights over 150 years ago, has been under study and remediation since 2016.
The jobs you can see from the street are utility jobs: gas and water line work, the treatment plants DPU opens to visitors for tours, and streetlight maintenance. The office side works out of 900 East Broad Street, where the customer care center fields utility calls.
