City of Roanoke, Virginia careers

Roanoke sits in a valley between Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains and the Alleghany Highlands, midway between New York and Atlanta on Interstate 81, and works as a hub for transportation, finance, and industry in southwestern Virginia. The city grew up with the railroad: the town of Big Lick, chartered in 1874, became the Town of Roanoke in 1882 as the Shenandoah Valley Railroad met the new Norfolk and Western, then the City of Roanoke in 1884. The government behind that name runs a mountain city that advertises miles of trails and parks within walking distance.
