Rochester, Minnesota started as a tavern stop: George Head claimed land in what's now downtown in July 1854, built Head's Tavern, and named the settlement after Rochester, New York. The territorial legislature made it the Olmsted County seat in 1855, and the city incorporated on August 5, 1858. What set it apart came later. A devastating tornado in 1883 pushed Dr. Mayo and the Sisters of Saint Francis toward founding St. Marys Hospital, opened in 1889, and by 1929 the Mayo Clinic that grew from it counted 386 physicians. Rochester's city government runs the services of a community that grew up around its medical center.
