Twenty parks, a golf course, a tennis club, playgrounds, and municipal swimming pools: Sunrise runs a full recreation operation for its 98,000-plus residents, along with a Senior Center and a Civic Center complex that includes a 300-seat theater and an art gallery. The city covers more than 18 square miles of western Broward County, Florida, about six miles west of Fort Lauderdale, reaching to the edge of the Everglades.

The history is short and colorful. A developer named Norman Johnson incorporated the city in 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village, drawing buyers with an upside-down model house that landed in Life Magazine; a 1971 referendum renamed it the City of Sunrise. Sawgrass Mills mall opened in 1990, and the arena now called Amerant Bank Arena followed in 1998, home ice for the Florida Panthers. Since 2014 the city has completed or begun roughly 356 million dollars in capital improvements, with nearly every park upgraded or expanded along the way, and a new 95,000-square-foot City Hall opened in 2023 to bring most city departments under one roof. The city also notes it hasn't raised its property tax millage rate since 2009, a detail that says something about how it likes to present its stewardship.
