Pat Noonan had already run The Nature Conservancy when he founded The Conservation Fund in 1985, and by 1987 it had a revolving fund whose dollars buy land, get recovered, and buy again in perpetuity. Forty years of that has protected more than 9 million acres across the 50 states, and in 2024 the Working Forest Fund on its own passed the million-acre mark in at-risk forestland secured. The Fund also runs the Freshwater Institute, launched in 1990 to work out how to raise fish sustainably.
Buying land is a transaction before it is a habitat, so the staff here includes real estate and legal specialists and the finance people who keep the revolving fund revolving, posted, as the careers page puts it, from Alaska to Florida.
