Copper Mountain College started in 1966, when Morongo Basin voters joined the Coachella Valley college district, and first held classes in fall 1967 at Twentynine Palms High School with about 60 students. The community later raised funds to build it a campus of its own six miles east of Joshua Tree, and in November 1999 residents voted 90 percent in favor of an independent Copper Mountain Community College District, fully accredited by June 2001. It serves the high desert towns of Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Landers, Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms.
A single-campus college in California's high desert hires lean: faculty across career and transfer programs, student services, and the operations staff that keep the Joshua Tree campus running.
