El Dorado County governs from Placerville, 45 miles northeast of Sacramento, under a name that is Spanish for Golden One. One of California's original 27 counties, formed in February 1850, it was seated first at gold-rush Coloma; Placerville took the job in 1857 as the gold ran thin. The territory covers 1,805 square miles of rolling hills and mountains, from the western slope up into the Lake Tahoe basin, with roughly 156,000 residents and only two incorporated cities, Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. A five-member Board of Supervisors runs the government, and the geography means county services stretch from foothill towns to a high-altitude resort economy.
