The seat of Mono County is Bridgeport, a village with a courthouse the county calls the second oldest in California still in continuous use. Staff are split between there and Mammoth Lakes. Mammoth Lakes is the only incorporated town in the county, sitting below an 11,053-foot summit, with roughly 7,500 year-round residents and a peak winter population above 35,000. Mono Lake, the high-desert saline lake with limestone tufa formations that gives the county its name, is nesting and migratory bird habitat, and the gold rush town of Bodie is held in what the state calls arrested decay.

Small towns and villages, rather than one central city, are where county staff report. The sheriff works from Bridgeport with substations at Crowley Lake and June Lake, and the duties there run to boating enforcement, mounted patrol, search and rescue, the coroner's work, and the jail. Behavioral Health, First 5, child support, animal control, cemeteries, road closures, and snow removal are county responsibilities too.
