Denton County careers

Denton County covers 953 square miles of north central Texas, governed by a Commissioners Court with four precincts and seated in the city of Denton, where the county has kept its courthouse since township lots were auctioned in January 1857. The Texas legislature established the county on April 11, 1846 and named it for John B. Denton, a pioneer preacher and lawyer killed in 1841; the seat moved three times, Pinckneyville and two towns both called Alton, before Denton stuck.

Growth is the county's defining fact. It counted 75,633 people in 1970, 143,126 in 1980, 276,083 in 1990, and 432,976 by 2000, a climb set in motion by the college that became the University of North Texas arriving in 1890 and accelerated by Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport opening in 1974, with Alliance Airport and Texas Motor Speedway following in 1989 and 1997. The landscape underneath is old Texas, the Eastern Cross Timbers running through the county's middle with blackland prairie on either side, but the population on top of it is new, and county government scaled up alongside it.
