The Georgia Legislature carved Dougherty County out of Baker County in 1853 and named it for Judge Charles Dougherty of Athens, then moved pieces of Worth County across in 1854 and 1856. It covers 326 square miles along the Flint River, cypress swamps and quail plantations included, and the 2010 census counted 94,565 residents. Albany is its one municipality, home to Albany State University, Albany Technical College, the Albany Civil Rights Institute, the Flint RiverQuarium, and the Parks at Chehaw.
