The G and the W are Harry Gear and Paul Williams, two distribution utility engineers who invented the detachable porcelain pothead in a small Chicago machine shop in 1905 and built a company around it. G&W Electric still makes switchgear, reclosers, cable accessories, sensors, and grid automation equipment, and its list of firsts includes the first fully submersible SF6 switchgear in 1974.
