Gateway Community Health Center began in 1963 as a piece of the local health department in Laredo, serving only migrants in Webb County. It separated as a 501(c)(3) in 1989, took federally qualified health center status in 1991, and in 2009 won federal funding through a Service Area Competition to extend primary care into neighboring Jim Hogg and Zapata counties. It now runs clinics across Laredo plus sites in Zapata and Hebbronville, covering urgent care, pediatrics, women's health, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, and health education.
