General Motors builds trucks, crossovers, cars, and parts, and sells software-enabled services and subscriptions alongside them, under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands. It files as a Delaware corporation incorporated in 2009, keeps its principal offices at 1240 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, and reports through three segments: GM North America, GM International, and the lending arm, GM Financial.

The workforce lines in that same annual report tell you what kind of employer this is. On the last day of 2025 GM employed roughly 88,000 hourly people and about 68,000 salaried ones, so hourly work is 56 percent of the payroll, and some 47,000 of the US hourly workforce is represented by unions, most of it by the UAW. Engineering does not all sit at headquarters either: the global vehicle architecture team works out of the Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. GM also holds equity stakes in ventures selling mainly in China, under the Baojun, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and Wuling badges. The most recent structural change was a retreat. In December 2024 GM announced it would stop funding Cruise's robotaxi development, and by February 2025 it had bought out the outside investors, begun winding the robotaxi business down, and combined GM and Cruise autonomous engineering inside the GM North America segment, which is where that work sits today.
