IOA started in January 1988 in half of a one-story, 3,000 square foot building in Apopka, Florida, when John and Valli Ritenour opened an agency they called Insurance Office of Florida. The first branch outside the state opened in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, in March 1997, and the name changed to Insurance Office of America that August to match. Headquarters is now Village Plaza in Longwood, just north of Orlando, and the firm counts more than 1,500 associates across over 60 offices in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Sixty-odd offices means producers and account executives working their own local markets, with account managers, claims handlers, and risk management specialists behind them. The firm writes for a long list of verticals, from construction and healthcare to marine, self-storage, and thoroughbred horse racing, so the industry you already know tends to matter as much as the city you are in.
