McNeese opened as Lake Charles Junior College on September 11, 1939 with 140 students and three buildings, a year after the Louisiana Legislature created it. It's part of the University of Louisiana System, and it teaches through five colleges: Business, the Burton College of Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health Professions, and Engineering and Sciences. The William J. Doré, Sr. School of Graduate Studies stands alongside those five, and agricultural sciences are taught inside Engineering and Sciences, in the Harold and Pearl Dripps School. The Lake Charles campus covers 122 acres and more than 50 buildings, and the university farms more than 1,200 acres besides.
