Mebane's first government meetings were held in a drugstore. A post office opened here in 1809, the place took its name from Brigadier General Alexander Mebane of the North Carolina Militia, and it incorporated in 1881 as Mebanesville before shortening to Mebane two years later; the charter was amended to the City of Mebane in February 1987. Water and wastewater facilities were first built in 1921, and Lake Michael was completed in 1953, though the city no longer draws its primary water supply from it.
Public Utilities and the Water Resource Recovery Facility carry the water work here, the facility treating sewage from homes, businesses, and industry before the clean water goes to Moadams Creek. Public Works, Engineering, and Permits and Inspections handle streets and construction, while Police, Fire, Recreation and Parks, a public information office, Planning and Zoning, Finance, and IT round out the departments.
