Thomas Edison was an early member of this YMCA, and he gave its building on Main Street in Orange its electric lights. Industrialist Samuel Colgate, revivalist Dwight L. Moody, and YMCA professional Sumner F. Dudley convened church leaders on October 15, 1885 to charter it for civic and cultural improvements to the Oranges. Its camp started in 1915 as a two-week experiment, fifteen boys and two donated tents; the Colgate family bought 158 acres in Sussex County for it the next year, and the site now runs to 600 acres.
Branch programs are the bulk of the work: child care, summer camps, wellness, aquatics, and before and after school care. East Orange holds the Turrell Center, whose teen center opened in October 2004, and an annual campaign funds program support and financial assistance across the service area.
