The Nevada National Security Sites are not all in Nevada. Ten locations make up the enterprise: the Site at Mercury and the North Las Vegas Facility, Livermore Operations and a Special Technologies Laboratory in California, Sandia and Los Alamos Operations in New Mexico, a Washington office, Remote Sensing Laboratory sites at Nellis Air Force Base and Joint Base Andrews, and a counterterrorism training program at Edgewood, New York. Mission Support and Test Services manages and operates all of it for the Energy Department's National Nuclear Security Administration.
Work here splits between the science and the infrastructure holding it up. Nuclear weapons experiments and the diagnostics behind them, global security and nonproliferation programs, and site-directed research and development account for the science. The trades, technicians, and security and emergency services a high-hazard site needs account for the rest, at Mercury and at the remote sensing laboratories.
