Pitt Community College was chartered in March 1961 and opened as the Pitt Industrial Education Center; when the Vernon E. White Building opened three years later it held 96 students in nine curricula. The North Carolina General Assembly gave the school its community college name in 1979, and university transfer programs came with it. Trustees bought 105 acres from H.L. Bowen's heirs in 1991, which is the ground most of the campus grew on, added the 131-acre Davenport property next door in 2005, and opened a Public Safety Training Center near Bethel in 2006 with pistol and rifle ranges.
Allied health teaching is a large piece of this college, with the Fulford Building given over to those curricula, alongside welding and masonry, vocational labs, and transitional studies. Campus police, a learning resource center, athletics, and the Public Safety Training Center near Bethel carry the work that is not classroom teaching.
