When a CUNY researcher wins a grant, the Research Foundation of The City University of New York is the body that signs the agreement, opens the account, hires the project staff, and answers to the sponsor. A nonprofit educational corporation since 1963, it exists to do exactly that: post-award fiscal and administrative work for CUNY's research and sponsored programs, from subawards and invoicing to budget monitoring, cost compliance, and the external audits that follow.
The central office runs Finance, Grants and Contracts, Human Resources, Internal Audit, Legal Affairs, Procurement and Payables, and Systems and Information Services, which builds and maintains the software the other departments run on. Separate from that central staff, RFCUNY carries the project employees working on grants at the CUNY campuses.
