The name came off a printer's proof. Reading the 1878 annual report of his Christian Mission, William Booth struck out the line calling it a volunteer army and wrote in Salvation Army instead, and those words became the basis of the organization's foundation deed. Booth and his wife Catherine had returned to the East End of London in 1865 to preach to the poor, the homeless, and the hungry; within ten years the mission counted over 1,000 volunteers and evangelists.
