St. Paul's took seven years to open. The idea surfaced in San Diego in 1953, and after feasibility studies and fundraising the nonprofit was founded in 1960 as a residential community for seniors of modest means. It now runs two senior living communities, a skilled nursing center, a child care program, and four PACE medical centers across San Diego County. The Board of Trustees dropped Homes from the name in October 2014, when St. Paul's Senior Homes and Services became St. Paul's Senior Services.
Preschoolers and PACE participants share this organization. The child care program sits beside a 59-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in Bankers Hill, PACE clinics in San Diego, Chula Vista, El Cajon, and North County cover primary care, medication management, therapy, home care, social work, and rides to appointments for people 55 and older still living at home, and Trinity Place and Ivy Senior Apartments opened in 2021 as supportive housing for formerly homeless seniors.
