Tarrant County's government runs from Fort Worth, its county seat since an 1856 election took the title from Birdville, seven years after the county was established. Around 2.2 million people live in the county today, an urban stretch of north central Texas where cattle and agriculture still play a major role in the economy, alongside aerospace companies and defense contractors.
