Erie, Colorado is named after Erie, Pennsylvania. R.J. Van Valkenburg, born in Schoharie County, New York, settled here with his family in 1867 and named the town for the place he had come from, and it was officially established on November 16, 1874. The railroad had reached the northern coal fields in 1871; before that, settlers along Coal Creek farmed or kept shops, and the Overland Stage ran Denver to Laramie on roughly the line of today's US 287.
Erie owns an airport, which is unusual for a town this size, and it runs an Environmental Services department covering air quality monitoring, sustainability, water conservation, waste reduction, and oil and gas regulation. Police, public works, utilities, parks and recreation, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, and a municipal court fill out the list.
