Tyler Junior College opened on September 17, 1926 inside Tyler High School, with 93 students and nine faculty members. It got a campus of its own after 1945, when Tyler voters approved a junior college district and issued $500,000 in bonds. The district now takes in six independent school districts, Chapel Hill, Grand Saline, Lindale, Tyler, Van, and Winona, and enrollment runs to roughly 11,000 students each fall semester with another 8,000 or so in continuing education each year.
A college drawing on six school districts teaches across academic transfer, health sciences, and workforce programs, and it houses students, so residential life, dining, and athletics staff belong to the payroll as well. The Apache Belles and the band are long-running programs with their own instructional staff, and continuing education for about 8,000 people a year is a separate teaching workforce.
