Uncommon Schools exists to start and run urban public schools that close the college completion gap, and it puts it in exactly those terms. The first opened in Newark in 1997, North Star Academy, with a promise to 72 students that they would be prepared to graduate from college. The network now runs 52 schools serving 20,000 students in Boston, Camden, New York City, Newark, and Rochester.

It sends more than 1,000 graduates from low-income communities to college every year, and it works outside its own buildings too, partnering with over 3,000 teachers and leaders in New York and New Jersey district schools on classroom instruction. If the name is familiar before you have seen a school, the books are probably why: Teach Like a Champion, Driven by Data, and Get Better Faster all came out of this organization, along with the workshops built on them. That publishing habit is a fair signal of what teaching here involves, because the same coaching methods are used internally. The network also takes on turnarounds, beginning with North Star Academy Alexander Street Elementary in Newark, an approach it later carried into Camden. Charter networks vary enormously; this one has been running since 1997, with a written method and a stated target.
