Ninety-four federal judicial districts cover the country, at least one in every state and one in the District of Columbia, and each carries a bankruptcy court inside it as a unit of the district court. Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands have courts hearing federal cases too. Two special trial courts sit apart from all of that: the Court of International Trade, and the Court of Federal Claims, which handles most money-damages claims against the government.
Every district court hires its own staff, courthouse by courthouse. Clerks of court and courtroom deputies, probation and pretrial services officers, court interpreters, court reporters, plus the IT and clerical staff a courthouse runs on, are the standing roles inside a district.
