The Nursing Service Supervisor is a registered professional nurse who is responsible for the direct supervision of the Program Support Assistants ensuring timely service is provided to Nursing Services for delivery of direct patient care. The Nursing Services Supervisor assumes continuous responsibility for work assignment based on priorities through selective consideration of the difficulty of the assignment and the capabilities of the staff.
- Duties include but not limited to: Serves as a resource for administrative, clinical, performance improvement, fiscal management, technology, education, customer service and compliance with VISN and accrediting organizational standards and performance measures for Nursing Services, as well as providing administrative and clinical support to the Deputy Associate Director, Patient Care Services. Utilizes a team approach, strongly encouraging staff empowerment and the opportunity for end users to be directly involved in processes/policies developed for Nursing Service for current and future operations. Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management, serving as organizational liaison for Nursing Services. Utilizes their clinical and managerial nursing expertise to optimize patient care quality and nursing productivity, effecting change in nursing practice using data analysis and validation to directly impact patient care delivery. Provides ongoing assessment and validation of data generated by nursing and takes action to address deficiencies. Provides coordination, oversight, and facilitation of training for Nursing Leadership. Provides oversight and management for the Nursing Program Support Assistants. Provides professional oversight and final editing of nursing policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines utilizing applicable Nursing Standards of Practice in collaboration with the Clinical Practice Council and the Patient Care Services Executive Committee. Reviews/recommends revisions of Medical Center Policies identifying nursing responsibilities. Creates and distributes Nursing reports, providing interpretation/comparison/summarizes data findings and reports to Nursing Senior Leadership. Collaborates with Nursing Leadership to establish strategic goals and objectives for Nursing Service. Interprets current regulatory standards to guide the Nursing Service in preparation for external accreditation (OIG, JC, CAP, Magnet), expansion of services and activation of inpatient facility. Develops/reviews nursing functional statements, position descriptions, competencies, performance appraisals, and performance plans. Utilizes organization, critical thinking, leadership and problem-solving skills to address/identify/resolve nursing administrative and clinical issues. Ensures administrative and clinical applications reflect VA standards of patient education, treatment interventions, outcome re-evaluations, and adherence to Nursing Service and VA Healthcare policies, including all new VA directives. Gathers data from personal observation to assist in ongoing improvement/customization of training for Nursing Senior Leadership and staff. Demonstrates expert knowledge and ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice, monitors and reports effectiveness of change outcomes to Nursing Senior Leadership.
