  1. Promote a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace.
  2. Supervise laboratory staff including, hiring, training, evaluating, and scheduling; set goals; plan and supervise work; ensure that quality standards are met and maintained.
  3. Provide technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory by evaluating and selecting test procedures and equipment; developing, and revising the Lab Policy and Procedure Manual; and preparing the lab for inspection and certification by accreditation agencies.     
  4. Perform and interpret laboratory tests on blood, urine, and other bodily fluids; prepare and examine smears and cultures for pathogenic organisms; conduct chemical, physical, and microscopic examinations on environmental specimens; interpret results; and review results for accuracy before releasing them to clients.
  5. Perform quality control procedures mandated by state and federal regulations and certification requirements to assure conformance to standard protocol and review proficiency testing.
  6. Implement and ensure conformance to safety practices mandated by the Federal Bloodborne Pathogen and Chemical Hygiene Law.
  7. Develop and monitor income and expense budgets and take any necessary corrective action; and submit monthly and quarterly billings.
  8. Review, analyze and recommend action on contracts with outside suppliers of goods and services.
  9. Gather and interpret information and data for reports to internal and external clients, programs, and organizations.
  10. Perform inventory control and procurement.
  11. Work occasionally outside of core business hours, completing phlebotomy and bench work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a closely related field.


Experience: Five years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in a patient centered environment or equivalent.  


Substitution: None.


Certifications/Licensure: Verification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by a national certification agency is required.  

The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated: 

  • Training and Experience Rating = 100% 


The examination for Medical Laboratory Scientist Supervisor will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions –do not mark “see resume” or “see work history” as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.

Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Supervisor. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted.


Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
