Performs skilled and manual duties in order to maintain Campbell County parks and turf. Maintains the park's buildings and structures. Maintains and repairs park and athletic field irrigation systems. Maintains athletic fields and an ice rink. Supervises seasonal employees to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of assigned areas and equipment. Position is an on-call rotating shift schedule (days, evenings, and/or weekends).The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
  • Develops and implements a park turf and plant health maintenance schedule including irrigation, fertilization, weed control, seeding, aerating, top dressing, chemical applications, and mowing.
  • Provides supervision, direction, scheduling, and assistance to seasonal staff to perform the maintenance of multiple park facilities: including grounds, trees, equipment, buildings, and irrigation systems in assigned areas.  Trains and motivates assigned staff with the safe and proper use of grounds maintenance equipment, and cleaning and pesticide chemicals. 
  • Plans, implements, and administers grounds beautification programs. Performs tree health inspections for the need of pruning and/or disease and insect control.
  • Oversees athletic field maintenance and renovations.
  • Implements a park irrigation maintenance schedule, including winterizing, start-up, leak repairs, installation / renovation, coverage monitoring, and clock functions.
  • Performs basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills as necessary.
  • Maintains accurate records of applications of chemicals and fertilizers.
  • Operates light, medium, and heavy equipment. Assists with maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists department personnel and county agencies with special events and work assignments as needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in grounds maintenance 
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • Class C driver's license
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicators License
Knowledge of:
  • English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
  • Pesticides and proper implementation of chemicals
  • Fertilization applications and calibration of equipment 
  • Grounds maintenance equipment
  • Principles and practices of turf management
  • Park irrigation system installation, design, and maintenance
Skill in:
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships 
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
  • Communication, both oral and written 
  • Operating manual and power grounds and landscape equipment and tools
Ability to:
  • Meet schedules and deadlines of the work
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
  • Perform diagnostic on plant disease and insect damage / infiltration
  • Conduct training sessions

  • Provide leadership and direction to assigned seasonal staff
