  • The Housekeeping Aid (HKA) - Environmental Services (EVS) Technicians who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A VA healthcare career as a HKA-EVS Technician means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff. As a HKA-EVS Technician, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties. Veterans rely on the skills of these professionals to keep patient areas clean and safe by addressing spills quickly, discarding trash, installing light bulbs in halls and rooms, and vacuuming and polishing floors. Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas. HKA-EVS Technicians sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers and move furniture. HKA-EVS Technicians carry out assignments with minimal supervision. As a working leader, the incumbent of this position will lead HKA-EVS Technicians (WG-1 and WG-2) in general housekeeping duties that will be preformed at the Medical Center. As a HKA-EVS Leader, the incumbent will: Relay project assignments to other employees, provide equipment and supplies to accomplish tasks. Initiate tasks or projects at a pace that will endure completion in a planned time frame. Ensures that employees maintain proper working techniques and standards. Be aware of standards, policy or methods in obtaining work-related information from the supervisor or written guidelines. Have the knowledge of and can perform all the duties associated within the Environmental Care Section. Can interpret directions from manufactured products, follow instructions, and carry the mission of the Service. Spot check employees work as to progress, quality and give the technical advice on unusual situations. Assures that employees practice established aseptic and safety techniques and the equipment is safe and in proper working condition. Be assigned to a variety of projects, depending on the need of the customer. Ensures that all established cleaning guidelines/procedures are followed. Maintain an even flow of work activity, assuring that each employee assigned will be productive in accomplishing tasks. Advise the supervisor on the progress of planned goals and reports, reasons for delays, and recommends solutions. Provide training to housekeeping aids and others as requested. Training may require development of material for presentation. Documents any issues that can be of help to supervisor, employees, or others. Other duties as assigned. Incumbent must possess a comprehensive knowledge of proper housekeeping methods and procedures to provide effective leadership in carrying out assignments and in properly training Housekeeping Aids in all phases of housekeeping. Incumbent must be knowledgeable of policies, guides, standards, and requirements related to hospital housekeeping programs. Must have working knowledge of PC computers including working with Microsoft office programs such as Word, Outlook, and Excel. Must also have a working knowledge of the Decentralized Hospital Computer System (DHCP) e-mail, employee menus and ASSISTS. Work Schedule: FT, Schedule to be determined by Supervisor.
