The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for a Parks Service Worker to support the Parks Department. This position performs a variety of tasks including beautifying and maintaining the appearance of the City’s parks, grounds, and facilities, maintaining and operating various equipment, and janitorial tasks to include emptying garbage, cleaning restrooms, stocking supplies, and preparing parks for rentals, events, and general use.

Work Week: Two work schedules are available, each consisting of four 10-hour shifts:
  • Monday–Thursday 6:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  • Friday–Monday 6:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

All new employees will initially work the Monday–Thursday schedule during training. Employees selected for the Friday–Monday schedule will transition to that schedule after completing training.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Maintains and ensures parks and sports fields are in clean and safe condition, including picking up trash and maintaining trash receptacles, and cleaning and repairing restrooms.
  • Maintains the City’s trails to ensure safe and easy access for City residents, including installing new trail systems, controlling weeds on existing trails, and keeping all trails clear of overgrowth and debris.  
  • Maintains sports fields, including set up prior to games, painting fields, inventory, changing out equipment, grooming artificial turf, repairing fences and backstops, and infield maintenance at baseball fields.
  • Utilizes City vehicles to transport equipment and supplies to City parks and facilities. 
  • Installs, inspects and maintains playground equipment to ensure safe operating conditions.
  • Builds and maintains the City’s ice rinks to ensure safe conditions.
  • Performs pesticide application as required, including calculating proper amounts of pesticides, spraying parks and trails, and completing necessary paperwork as required.
  • Maintains records of work completed and vehicle and equipment status on City lands, facilities, and equipment using the City’s computerized maintenance management system.
  • Removes snow and controls ice on City parks’ sidewalks, parking lots, foot bridges, and facility entrances in the winter months to ensure safe travel for both pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Maintains City parks’ landscape by mowing grass, weed eating, aerating, hand watering, and upkeep of flower beds, trees, and shrubs using hand and power tools.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems as necessary.
  • Maintains the interior and exterior of park buildings as required including roofs, siding, plumbing, and electrical systems as necessary.
  • Paints buildings and restrooms as directed, including staining and oiling signs, garbage racks, trail markers, benches, and picnic tables.
  • Operates and maintains light and medium-duty equipment, including, pickups with snowplow attachments, trailers, utility vehicles, mowers, tractors, brush chippers, backhoes, front-end loaders, and other related equipment.
  • Operates a variety of landscape and construction hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. Provides outstanding customer service to City of Bozeman residents, employees, and customers.
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • Some (at least (1) year) related equipment operation experience; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Some knowledge of basic principles and practices of construction, maintenance, and repair activities in Parks.
  • Some knowledge of safe and proper use of basic hand tools, power tools, and other related construction equipment.
  • Some knowledge of basic safety principles and practices of maintenance and repair activities.
  • Some knowledge of related Federal, State, and local ordinances and regulations governing parks operations.
  • Some knowledge of techniques, methods, and materials related to the construction and maintenance work.
  • Some knowledge of maintenance and operation of related light and medium duty equipment used in functional area of assignment.
  • Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the function of services within the public sector, preferably within a municipal government.
  • Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn current practices and procedures involved in City service delivery.
  • Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the overall functions, duties and responsibilities of assigned Division.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of times with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to efficiently operate related light and medium-duty equipment, hand and power tools, and other related equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.

  • Must possess a current valid Driver’s License and have the ability to obtain a Montana Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.
  • Certifications specific to the functional areas may be required.
