Right-of-Way Herbicide Technician

Are you looking for a hands-on outdoor career where your work helps keep our community safe, accessible, and well maintained? In this technical field role, you’ll support vegetation management and traffic operations throughout County rights-of-way, combining environmental fieldwork with the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, pavement markings, and marine navigational aids.

You’ll inspect public rights-of-way to identify nuisance vegetation and determine appropriate treatment methods using herbicides or non-chemical controls. You’ll operate specialized trucks, sprayers, pumps, and pesticide application equipment while following strict local, state, and federal regulations and safety requirements.

Your work will also help keep drivers and boaters moving safely. You’ll install, inspect, repair, and replace traffic control signs, pavement markings, and marine navigational aids; identify and correct safety or visibility concerns; set up traffic control zones; and maintain detailed records of inspections, treatments, and completed work.

This position offers plenty of variety and time in the field. You may work on or near salt and brackish water, operate a water vessel, assist with marine debris removal, participate in an on-call rotation, and complete training to maintain required certifications and endorsements.

Education and Experience:
An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent. 
• One (1) year of experience in applying herbicide and pesticides and installing and maintaining traffic control signs and marine navigational aids.

Licenses and/or Certificates:

• Must maintain a valid driver’s license. 
• Must possess and maintain Florida Public Pesticide Applicator’s license. 
• Within six (6) months of position assignment:
  • Must obtain and maintain Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic certification from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) 
  • Must obtain the Right of Way endorsements under the Florida Public Pesticide Applicators License
  • Boater’s Safety Course completion

You have a working knowledge of vegetation management practices, including the identification, assessment, and treatment of nuisance plant species within public rights-of-way. You understand—or are able to quickly learn—the federal, state, and County regulations governing vegetation management, pesticide and herbicide applications, and traffic control signage.

You’re comfortable working in the field and safely operating a variety of vehicles and equipment, including trucks, commercial herbicide and pesticide spray systems, pumps, sprayers, blowers, and other application equipment. You can perform basic equipment maintenance, properly handle specialized scientific equipment, and wear required protective equipment—including respirators and chemical suits—for extended periods.

Technology and accurate documentation are also important parts of the role. You’re comfortable using computers, tablets, Microsoft Office, and job-related systems such as Cityworks, Cartegraph, Sign View, ArcView, ArcMap, and other GIS applications to perform data entry, maintain records, prepare reports, and document field activities.

You’re prepared for hands-on work in varying weather and environmental conditions, including work on or around waterways. You’re able to operate a water vessel and swim in open salt and brackish water when required, while consistently following established safety procedures and regulatory guidelines.

Above all, you’re dependable, safety-conscious, and able to prioritize assignments, follow detailed instructions, and use sound judgment when solving problems. You communicate professionally with coworkers and the public and take pride in providing responsive customer service while helping maintain safe, accessible, and well-managed public spaces.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.   Frequent lifting of up to 80 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights, and/or dust.
