The Surgical Evaluation Unit (SEU) Registered Nurse position provides pre-operative/procedural care, including (but not limited to) the nursing assessment of patients, assuring all lab work and other pre-operative/procedural testing is completed or ordered and communicated to team members. Provides clear and concise preoperative teaching to patients and families with written and verbal communication.

• The Surgical Evaluation Unit (SEU) Registered Nurse maintains knowledge of current American Society of Peri anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards, VHA Directive and service level standard operating procedures. The Surgical Evaluation Unit (SEU) is responsible for ensuring comprehensive documentation of all phases of care and is timely, complete, and accurate in the electronic health record. Duties may include, but not limited to the following: Completes orientation according to expected standards. Works with close supervision, is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and seeks direction from others as needed. Manages workload as assigned, organizes, and completes own assignments in an efficient and appropriate manner. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of interdisciplinary care. Establishes a therapeutic relationship, allowing the patient to attain, maintain or regain optimal function through assessment and treatment. Engages patients, families, and other caregivers to incorporate knowledge, values, and beliefs into care planning without judgement or discrimination. Knowledgeable of ethical issues related to professional nursing practice. Applies evidence-based practice/research to patient care. Participates in unit-based activities to improve and deliver cost effective patient care. Demonstrates knowledge of specific unit level performance improvement activities. Incorporates patient preferences into shared care delivery decisions.
