The Sterile Processing Service (SPS) Quality Coordinator is an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for leading and overseeing the quality management program for all critical and semi-critical reusable medical devices (RMD) within the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS).

• The Quality Coordinator ensures that clinical staff across all sites of care maintain competencies and education aligned with Veterans Affairs (VA) directives, regulatory requirements, and current industry standards. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates RMD practices across the medical center and affiliated clinics, ensuring safe, consistent, and compliant reprocessing practices. The SPS Quality Coordinator supports learner development using effective teaching methods, competency assessments, and evaluation of educational outcomes. This role collaborates closely with SPS leadership, the RMD Coordinator, and interdisciplinary partners to strengthen system-level oversight, standardize practices, and promote a positive and safe patient and employee experience throughout the continuum of care. The RN participates in environment-of-care and clinical rounds to verify adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), identify opportunities for improvement, and address complex quality and safety challenges in partnership with Infection Prevention and Control, Engineering Service, and other stakeholders. The Quality Coordinator provides leadership in advancing sustainable quality practices and fostering a culture of safety and high reliability. The SPS Quality Coordinator ensures full compliance with Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) expectations, Office of Sterile Processing (OSP) guidelines, and all regulatory and accreditation standards through continuous monitoring, auditing, and documentation oversight. The RN supports organizational accountability, drives performance improvement, and maintains continuous readiness for internal and external surveys related to RMD reprocessing. As a program leader, the RN applies a systems-based approach to ensure safe, effective, and compliant reprocessing of reusable medical devices across the healthcare system. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care. The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. Collects and analyzes data, conducts routine and targeted audits, and monitors compliance with VISN, OSP, and VHA directives as well as regulatory and accreditation standards. Collaborates with the SPS Educator to conduct quality assurance reviews of SOPs and competency validation processes. Works closely with Infection Prevention and Control, Engineering, and other clinical and non-clinical partners to identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to SPS operations and RMD reprocessing. Participates in facility councils, committees, and workgroups, demonstrating leadership, comprehensive planning, effective communication, and innovative problem-solving skills aimed at strengthening the safety and quality of SPS and RMD operations. Requires specialized knowledge of RMD reprocessing principles, quality management methodologies, and regulatory requirements.
