Salary:  $54,204 - $71,136.00 Yearly. The salary does not include an additional 5% premium pay for employees working in King County or an on-site 24/7 facility 5% premium.

We have one permanent vacancy and one non-permanent expected to last 6 to 12 months.

The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is looking for a Recreation Therapist 2 to plan, organize and lead therapeutic recreation activities to meet needs, interests, and abilities of individual residents at Echo Glen Children’s Center, a Juvenile Rehabilitation maximum security residential facility.

The Opportunity:
You will provide therapeutic recreational programs consistent with the Integrated Treatment Model and Dialectical/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You will assess, plan, develop, implement, and modify therapeutic recreation services to meet the individual needs of a co-educational offender population with varying degrees of mental health and security requirements. You will also provide interventions with youth to reduce the use of isolation and room confinement.

Some of what you will do:

• Perform therapeutic recreation assessments of residents. 
• Plan, organize and implement therapeutic recreation Plan of Care to meet the needs of individual residents.
• Facilitates improvement of social, cognitive, emotional and physical functional abilities.
• Organize and lead recreational therapy activities.
• Help youth identify goals, and then link them to opportunities and resources on campus to aid in goal directed behaviors.
• Work in aquatics and one or more skill areas, directing, conducting, or instructing in programs of sports, music, arts and crafts.
• Develop and procure programming that is specific to addressing egregious behaviors that would lead to room confinement.
• Use evidence-based interventions, specifically DBT.
• Attend to security responses for aggressive behaviors and provide the opportunity to remove nonaggressive youth from the unit and engage in programming to allow for de-escalation without confining other youth.
• Direct, train and coordinate the work of recreation therapy students and/or volunteers in therapeutic recreational procedures.
• Perform basic data entry and retrieval functions using an electronic management information system.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited Therapeutic Recreation Program, AND 18 months of professional therapeutic recreation experience.
OR
Equivalent education/experience.

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

• Demonstrated understanding of adolescent development and juvenile rehabilitation practices and principles; Experience providing cognitive/behavioral therapeutic interventions.
• Demonstrated competency in relating to clients from diverse backgrounds and cultural groups. The incumbent must possess expertise in providing services to urban youth and have an understanding of juvenile offender behavior.
• Knowledge of principles and techniques of group and individual therapeutic recreation.
• Knowledge and training in aquatics, arts and crafts, music, and sports.
• Principles of supervision.
• Basic knowledge of pool operations and health and safety codes to develop and teach various swim classes for all levels and abilities.
