Join our team at the Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP), where we provide essential engineering, construction, and maintenance services to support the agency’s facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems.
With your expertise in operating heavy machinery, you will lead a skilled crew in the transportation and operation of heavy equipment and supervise projects such as intake sediment removal, transportation of live fish, demolition of facilities and structures, installation of underground utility conduit, and domestic and production pipeline repairs.
What to Expect:
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Fish Hauling Supervisor’s duties will include,
Project Management:
- Supervise a team of journey-level workers in the transportation and operation of heavy equipment through scheduling, directing, coordinating, and supervising in the various phases of construction.
- Independently prepare drawings, sketches, and as-built diagrams to support project implementation and communicate technical instructions to staff.
- Participate in conceptual and 30-60-90 drawing reviews, providing expertise to identify and mitigate issues of functionality or feasibility.
- Analyze project specifications to determine work sequencing, staffing needs, material requirements, and delivery schedules.
- Identify materials and services that require purchasing contracts and develop specifications for the bidding process, including detailed cost estimates.
- Conduct onsite inspections of components, equipment, and fixtures to determine need for maintenance or repair.
Supervision and Mentoring:
- Supervise and mentor a team of technical- and professional-level staff, in order to support an effective and motivated team.
- Set goals and objectives, create strategies to implement, and develop performance measures and standards to ensure individual and program performance objectives are met.
- Develop and implement staff training and development plans, manage personnel issues, and monitor/inspect work in progress.
Fish Transport:
- Schedule fish transport activities at local, state, tribal, and federal hatcheries.
- Operate water tankers up to 6000 gallons to safely transport live fish statewide.
- Ensure proper disinfection of tankers following fish transfers to prevent the spread of fish diseases and aquatic invasive species (AIS).
- Proficiently follow species-specific guidelines for safe fish loading, hauling, and transport.
- Install and monitor liquid oxygen tanks and perform water quality tests for maintaining dissolved oxygen levels.
Heavy Construction Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
- Inspect, operate, and transport all types of heavy earthmoving equipment in the execution of all phases of construction, as it relates to hatchery maintenance, installation, and repair tasks.
- Clear, remove, and transport mud and debris from on-site hatchery abatement ponds, intake structures, demolition projects, and general construction tasks using excavators, boom trucks, backhoes, and dump trucks.
- Work around, expose, and install sensitive, buried utilities and alarm lines using backhoes and track excavators.
Plumbing:
- Install, disassemble, and replace various plumbing components (such as pipes, valves, gates, couplers, and manifolds).
- Inspect supply lines, fixtures, and valves to determine cause of failures and recommend maintenance and repair actions.
Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards: Work is performed at construction sites located on hatchery and wildlife areas, and includes some office-based computer work. Field conditions include working and driving in extreme weather, rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, confined spaces, and other difficult-to-reach spaces. Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and repetitively lifting up to 50 pounds while loading/unloading trucks or moving materials around the project site. This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week. The standard work schedule includes the potential for occasional evening or weekend work as needed. Schedules may vary based on business needs, time of year, and/or weather conditions.
Travel Requirements: 80-90% travel, depending on season.
Tools and Equipment: Basic hand and power tools (such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, chainsaws, dewatering and recirculating pumps, powered motors), automotive and heavy equipment (such as commercial combination dump trucks and trailers, wheel loaders, dozers, track excavators, power wheelbarrows, boom trucks, backhoes, all-terrain forklifts, and personnel lifts), and computers.
Customer Interactions: Frequently interact with Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following options. All requirements within an option may be gained concurrently.
Option 1: Construction and Maintenance Project Lead Experience
- Two (2) years of experience as a Construction and Maintenance Project Lead.
- Five (5) years of professional experience operating heavy machinery, such as excavators, loaders, and dozers.
Option 2: Skilled Trade Apprenticeship
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled trade.
- Two (2) years of professional work experience in a skilled trade.
- Five (5) years of professional experience operating heavy machinery, such as excavators, loaders, and dozers.
Option 3: Skilled Trade Experience
- Four (4) years of professional work experience in a skilled trade.
- Five (5) years of professional experience operating heavy machinery, such as excavators, loaders, and dozers.
In addition to meeting one of the options above, all candidates must have the following experience or competencies:
- Ability to identify and schedule phases of construction and coordinate staffing, supplies, and equipment to successfully complete projects.
- Ability to prepare accurate and concise expense reports.
- Basic computer skills, including experience using Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Knowledge of:
- Construction methods, operating costs, and the capabilities and limitations of construction equipment and materials.
- Contractual requirements, including specifications and fiscal procedures.
- Engineering principles and their application to construction.
- Reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and shop drawings.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
A valid, current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position. Candidates selected to move forward in the hiring process will be required to provide proof of their Class A CDL.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
- Professional supervisory experience, especially in a construction setting.
- Knowledge of Hydraulic Project Approval (HPA) Permits.
- Boom Truck Certification.
- Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL) Certification.
- Experience transporting live fish.
