This position is located in the VA Medical Center Hampton, Virginia under the Maintenance and Repair Section of Engineering Services. The incumbent will be responsible for the installation, modification, troubleshooting, servicing and maintenance of both medium and low voltage electrical equipment, circuits and all associated devices. This incumbent is a full performance electrician incumbent requiring the skills and abilities of a journeyman level electrician.

  • The electrician is responsible for a diverse range of journeyman electrician duties, including the installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, and fire alarm systems. Duties include but are not limited to: Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, operate and test the emergency power distribution system consisting of ten generators, ranging from, 350kw to 1200kw, 25 transfer switches, 480 volt switchgear, 26 volt dc batteries and chargers, fuel pumps and day tanks; and oil filled transformers, 480 volt switchgear, dry transformers and breaker panel boards, 208/120 volt transformers and breaker panels, main switchgear batteries. Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, operate and test 4160 volt switchgear consisting of transformer, and air vacuumed breakers. Assist the Electrical Supervisor in helping to resolve design and installation problems with Engineers, Service Administrators, contract personnel and ensure the various projects are completed in a timely manner. Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances. Drive the government vehicle to perform regular duties and transport equipment. Works with other trades in the performance of their related duties. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD02830A Physical Requirements: Works inside and outside of the Hampton VA Medical Center. Work is usually dirty, dusty, hot, cold, greasy, and noisy, and is sometimes performed during inclement weather. Occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shock, burns, and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, requiring considerable standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and kneeling; works in tiring and uncomfortable positions; frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools and equipment. Lifts and/or carry 75 pounds.
